Ask About Daily Medication

If your cat is on any sort of daily medication, ask your veterinarian if the medication needs to be stopped before pet surgery. If your cat is diabetic and needs insulin, ask when you should give the last dose before surgery. Ask our veterinary clinic if we will give insulin shots while your cat is here.

Prepare a Recovery Room

Your cat will need a clean, quiet place to recover after surgery. Prepare a warm bed. Make sure there is a litter box and a bowl of water in the room. Let your children know to leave your cat alone while he or she recovers. Plan how to keep other pets away from your cat so he or she can rest.

Keep Your Cat Indoors

Your cat will have to fast overnight before surgery. Keep your cat indoors to make sure it does not eat anything. If you have a cat flap that you cannot lock, move your cat into a room with a closed-door so he or she will not get out.

Separate Your Cat

If you have other pets, place your cat in a room away from them. In the morning when you feed your other pets, your cat will want to eat as well. Not being able to see the other pets eat will make your cat quieter.

Put Your Cat on an Overnight Fast

Your veterinarian will let you know exactly when you need to start fasting your cat, but usually, it’s about 10 at night. You may need to take the water bowl away a few hours before surgery. This way, your cat will be less likely to choke on vomit while under anesthesia.
